This is the slowest week of my life. Eden makes me promise not to visit Albert’s while they investigate the vaewolves, but she has to get Daniel involved before Amethyst will agree to stay away from her beloved armchair.

Daniel lays the guilt on with a trowel. What would Sean say about you throwing yourself in harm’s way for no good reason? He trusted us to look out for you; don’t make us break our promises. On and on it goes until she caves.

Magnus and Archer agree to teleport directly into Albert’s hallway and patrol the garden, so it looks like more people live there. Magnus is convinced the vaewolves will be back. Seth refuses to go near the place, making his feelings about everyone else’s involvement very clear. As far as he’s concerned, Albert and Boxer are still the enemy.

Daniel and Lucifer are banned from going over there in case they’re recognised by the vaewolves from the hotel. Lucifer’s not bothered, but Daniel doesn’t appreciate being housebound, even though he knows it’s the best way to keep Rhiannon safe. They’re taking their new relationship slowly, which means there’s a crumpled duvet on the sofa bed in the small sitting room next to the drawing room. Daniel has turfed himself from his own bed.

I spend my days inside, painting the changing landscape. Filling canvas upon canvas with misty, fog-frozen patchwork fields with barely there boundaries, criss-crossed in grey, and trees huddled in smudgy clusters. Painting mists lifting in distant fields, where a pale jade washes the grass, and further away still, the hills on the horizon draped in a bluish-purple haze, like a subdued layer of amethyst, bright against the white sky.

I absolutely do not paint water-speckled freckles, or misaligned buttons, or wonky smiles.

After five days, the vaewolves stop coming, but Eden wants to be sure they’re gone for good before relaxing her ban on our visits. I’m sure they’ll be back, but Amethyst begs me not to say so in front of Eden.
